Clover Meadow
(August 25- 28, 2005)

This trip again saw many new faces in camp. We removed about 50 trees from trails and built a new "causeway" over a marshy area on the Fernandez Trail connector trail leading to the parking lot from the Clover Meadow campground area.  The Forest Service estimated it would take us 3 days to complete that project and we got it done in 1/2 day.  More success for the High Sierra Volunteer Trail Crew!

Thanks to Barbara, Tony, Tom Williams, Tom Duxbury, Dave, Xiomara and Eric for their pictures.  These will be posted this week.

The group shot.

Ken Murray surveys a large downed tree across the Cassidy Trail.  This tree had many large limbs making it a challenge to prepare for sectioning.

Ken gives instruction to the crew on the safe operation of tools needed to clear this tree.

11 year-old Anna Brown helps clear the "stawbs" from the tree.

Ben pitches in sawing a large limb off the tree as his dad Mike helps.

Andrea Brown helps her son Ben saw the tree.  Actually, she pulled him as he held on...  whatever works.

Anna and her mom Andrea saw the tree almost through.

Jill from Costa Mesa works on the cross-cut saw as the serious sawing begins.

Finally the sawing is complete and the section is rolled off the trail...

...and out of the way.

The crew poses after a job well done.

Relaxing during the lunch break.

The guys made a wheelbarrow look like a Calistoga Wagon to poke good-natured fun at Ken Murray's planned trans-Sierra hike...  there's a story behind this from a past backcountry trip.  You had to be there...

The perpetrators;  Tom, Bruce and Tom.

Building the "causeway".  Scoping out the project and how it's going to go in.

A new section of trail had to be constructed from scratch to re-route the trail away from the samll meadow that was being trampled.

Yes, Shane is joining in helping build the trail.

The finished new route...

Now, the logs have to be cut and prepared to act as trail borders for the rock and dirt.

The logs are laid down...

The gravel has to be crushed...

and then the trail is filled with gravel...

...and dirt is filled in over.

Catherine surveys the result...

And the official dedication ceremony!
