Huntington
Lake-September
(Sept.
7-11, 2005)
Page One
Bear Boxes,
trees removed and causeways replaced.
We cleaned, repaired, painted, and installed bear
boxes in campgrounds all over the Huntington Lake area. Also, on
the Nellie Lake trail, we repaired a bridge over marsh lands at Mary's
Meadow.

Our group shot. It was a large group!
The teenagers from Madera High joined this weekend and did a
marvelous job on the bear boxes. |
| |
Existing bear boxes were cleaned and painted... |
Everyone pitched in. |
What troopers! They are all definitely welcome back! |
The entire work crew repairing and painting bear boxes.
...and afterward back in camp playing "pine-cone football".
..."Go deep!"
Touchdown! (Ouch!)
The Causeway Project replaced this degraded section of an
improved trail over a marsh portion of Mary's Meadow on the
Nellie Lake Trail.
The non-elevated section of trail had to be dug and re-packed. |
Local live trees
had to be felled; Tom and Jim handle that part of the
process....
...limbs removed...
...cut into sections...
...and then the sections are split by Roger in expert fashion,
who made his own wedges from limbs from the tree. What a
Daniel Boone!
Splitting logs is precision work...
The finished, split sections are de-barked by Sharon, shown here
debarking a whole log....

...and the finished pieces are placed in the trail where needed.

Whole logs are used for trail borders

Larry drills
holes where the spikes will be driven to hold everything in
place...

...as seen here...
...and here...
A job well done...
...on both repaired
sections.

Sandy, Catherine (Crew Leader), Jim and Roger. |
A nice trail results
suitable for human and stock traffic for many years to come! |
